Sadly, there were some major issues.
-Cam Buckets:
All the cam buckets on the intake side (and a few on the exhaust) were crushed — almost like someone had put them in a vise. This kind of damage couldn’t have happened during engine
operation; it must’ve been done by a previous owner, maybe thinking they were hydraulic buckets and trying to “empty” them out. The damage wasnt very visible to the eye, so I didn’t notice
anything wrong when installing them. That one’s on me.
The result was a loose fit in their bores, causing noise and, even worse, making some of them stick and causing
the valves to contact the pistons at high RPMs.
Valves made 2–3 mm deep imprints on the pistons over time. Surprisingly, all the valves are still straight and sealing fine.
-The block had been bored WAY too large — that one’s also on me for not double-checking. The pistons had around 0.5 mm of play.
There wasn’t much blow-by or loud piston slap, but the pistons were rocking enough that they occasionally hit the head on one side.
Another lesson learned.
BUILD #3
Aiming for 240HP+ this time.
Got a Shim under Bucket kit, allowing me to run the biggest toda cams with the biggest lift they offer.
Currently waiting for GR to sell their new 4A-GE Heads and blocks to have a good base to start.
